Project background
Starting from the initial knowledge of Dunhuang in 2018, we will lead users to know Dunhuang with the symbolic symbol "flying", and try to integrate the stories and emotions in murals into the world outlook by 2020, telling the well-known story of Dunhuang nine color deer and protecting it with love.

The multiple core of the king's glory praising life emotion coincides with the cultural core of Dunhuang's openness, tolerance and goodness, and hopes to achieve the same mission in the inheritance of national culture. Because of these countless connections, we have started the third quarter of cooperation. Based on the existing skin settings, we try to extract the essence of Dunhuang art aesthetics from a more dimensional perspective, and use artistic expression techniques to convey the aesthetic and spiritual treasures in the murals further in the way that modern people can "understand" and "understand".
As a senior visual designer of tianmeiyi design center, I am mainly responsible for the visual creativity and executive output of the whole case.
Cave 220 is the real origin of the prosperity of music images in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. This time, we mainly focus on it. Seeing cave 220 is like seeing "Tang rhyme Hu Feng" and "Chang'an style" in the prosperous age of the Tang Dynasty.


"Dun" means "big". "Huang" means "Sheng".
Creative thinking
Tracing back to the history of Hu Xuan dance, it first entered the Central Plains with Kang national music. Roughly from the reign of the Northern Zhou Dynasty to the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, Hu Xuan dancers were constantly presented by countries in the western regions. It not only shows the social demand for Hu Xuan dance at that time, but also creates conditions for the popularity of Hu Xuan dance.
Hu Xuan dance music originated in the western regions. It came to Chang'an through the Silk Road and was painted in Dunhuang murals by painters. Now, the world has untied the connection between double-layer murals and modern art.


Different from the heavy and serious mood of Dunhuang cooperation in the previous two seasons, the most basic feature of Hu Xuan dance is "circle".
And "circle" happens to be one of the instinctive behaviors of humans and animals to express happiness. After excavating the historical background and artistic characteristics and confirming the emotional tone, we launched our ideas from the perspective of visual expression. "Circle" can not only be a plane, but also a dynamic, multi-faceted form of expression across space and time. With the clue of this "circle", the subsequent visual expression has a direction.
In the enterprise publicity stage, with the "code 220" as the clue and the "circle" as the form of expression, the user guessed that the number "220" dissipated with the wind and gravel not only made the user interested in the content of cave 220, but also implied the irreversible meaning of the disappearance of Dunhuang murals.

In the interpretation of the theme of "Hu Xuan in a prosperous era turns into a millennium", it also closely follows the form of "circle", and deduces the story of Hu Xuan coming to Chang'an from the western regions via the Silk Road, painted in Dunhuang murals and passed on to modern times in the same space.
This artistic technique is also the "same picture at different times" technique commonly used in Dunhuang murals.

Excavation angle (what angle did we do from?)

Based on the historical change story of Hu Xuan dance in cave 220, it is carried out from many angles, such as the beauty of music, dance, clothing accessories, spiritual core and so on. Tell a story of cultural exchange, connection and inheritance based on Hu Xuan dance. In particular, I would like to thank Mr. Zhu Xiaofeng, deputy research librarian of the Institute of Archaeology of Dunhuang Research Institute, for writing the text for us and guiding the content of the examination.
The beauty of music - "no drum singing"
The distinctive musical instrument images in Dunhuang music and dance are mostly painted in the sky.
The ribbon on the body is wound to show the dynamics of flying, and no player appears to prove the attribute of Miaoyin.
Draw inspiration from the musical instruments in the murals and try to reinterpret the beauty of music and dance in the murals in a three-dimensional way.

Excavate the Hu Xuan music and dance instruments in the murals, and restore them one by one in a three-dimensional way.
Because melody and rhythm are the most basic elements of Dunhuang music.
Hu Xuan dance music is a kind of music based on percussion, which is warmly publicized and has a strong sense of rhythm. Therefore, in the design, instruments with strong drum points such as "Dala drum", "chicken Lou drum", "bell" and "waist drum" are added.

In addition, we also extracted the ancient music scores recorded in the murals for visual design expression.
Dunhuang music score is the earliest music score seen so far in China, and it is also one of the ancient notation methods.


The Buddhist Scripture says: "there are musical instruments hanging in the void, such as tianbaochuang, without drum singing."
Beauty of clothing accessories - "Lizhu flying star"

In Dunhuang murals, Hu Xuan dance costumes are characterized by light texture and girdle. The ornaments include long scarves, streamers, rings, plutonium, wearing treasure like corolla, etc.
According to historical records, "wearing a corolla, eyebrows dotted with pekoe, a Yingluo on the chest and a double bracelet on the arm.
The poem said, "the rainbow halo light towel controls the flow of electricity, and the return wind dances in the air."

The combination of Dunhuang's classic caisson painting technique and dress patterns not only retains the charm of Dunhuang, but also widens the gap with the previous themes Try to use this artistic technique of "Deconstruction" and "reorganization" to reflect the beauty of clothing accessories of Diao Chan's skin.


The beauty of Dance - "turn like the wind"
The temperament and charm of dance in Dunhuang murals mostly show euphemism, charm, piety, kindness, modesty and elegance, which are highly unified with Qi, meaning, God and inner emotion. Create an artistic atmosphere of "people in the picture" and pursue the sensory presentation of moving and static in silence.

According to historical records, Hu Xuan dancers stand on a small round blanket and turn like the wind. Also, Hu whirled and danced on a small round blanket, treading vertically and horizontally, and his feet did not leave the blanket at last.
In the hand shape design of the characters, we choose the "orchid style" and "Bergamot style" in the basic hand shape of the Dunhuang School of Chinese classical dance. The typical eye design of "virtual vision" makes the expression of the whole picture as ethereal and flexible as possible.

Time and inheritance - "one turn into a millennium"
Hu Xuan dancers usually dance on a small round blanket. This small round blanket is also known as "dance carpet". In the performance of the small round blanket, we draw inspiration from the pattern design of bead couplets in the murals, so as to restore the dance banquet style of that year as much as possible.

Not only that, we also use the line drawing method to re outline the posture and details of the Hu Xuan dancer in the wall painting for design, leaving this happy and beautiful rotating moment for thousands of years.


Spiritual power - "transmission of happiness instinct"
The beauty of Dunhuang murals is irreversible over time, but the profound connotation behind the murals is the spiritual treasure house left to the world.
The sincere and straightforward emotion and happy expression behind Hu Xuan dance make this cross-cultural, cross space integration and cross time inheritance possible.

In the project cooperation in the third quarter of Dunhuang, from the perspective of young game users, use creative and artistic methods to enlarge, connect and inherit Chinese cultural treasures, and make young people really love Chinese traditional culture in a "more interesting" way of "understanding" and "understanding".
